Attn: Songwriters and Singers – 2 Free Seminars

SEMINAR: The BigSchmooze! Presents Songwriting Worksop – Hook, Line and Sinkers

Ellen Drake of The BigSchmooze! and Peter Linseman of Music Mentor Productions leads the workshop on hooks, titles, lyric development, arrangement, inspirational exercises etc.

WHEN: Sunday February 14th, 2010 - 1:00pm to 3:00pm

Peter Linseman of Music Mentor Productions leads the workshop which will feature hooks, titles, lyric development, arrangement, inspirational exercises, song arrangement and structure, etc. Peter created Music Mentor Productions and started instructing the very first “Songwriting & Music Business Course” for the Toronto School Board 15 yrs ago. Peter recently started the first Toronto Regional Writers Group for the Songwriters Association of Canada. Let the Songwriting Workshop - Hook, Lines and Sinkers, help you to fish for some new inspirations that you can apply to your songs. Experience dozens of “on the spot” creations individually and collectively!

Workshop outline:

- Writing From A Title - bring your hook book

- Lyric Development - conversational, story, metaphoric, structure of lyrics, rhyming patterns and word rhymes

- Inspiration - writing lyric from life experience, imagined and brainstorming for inspiration

- Song Arrangement and Structure - the function of intro, verse, pre-chorus, chorus, hook, bridge and their arrangement

Answer these questions about your own songs:
Song Critique (based on a publisher’s mental checklist)
1) What does the song’s title tell you?
2) Is there a strong beginning?
3) Do the lyrics sound fresh, common, cliché, done to death, etc.?
4) Does the melody, lyric or production present an unusual angle or hook?
5) Is there a payoff for the listener and what is it?
6) What is the song structure (ABAB, AABA, AAA) and is it appropriate?
7) Is there a lull anywhere in the song?

Bring copies of a single lyric and CD because a few songs will be chosen for examples.

Location: The Black Swan Tavern, (upstairs) 154 Danforth Ave. Toronto

Pre-registration not required.

SEMINAR: Creative Voice Clinic and Student Showcase - Find Your Unique Voice

Please join me as I facilitate the Creative Voice Clinic and present my students as part of the Student / Musician Showcase

WHEN: Sunday February 14th, 2010 - 1:00pm to 3:00pm

Student Showcase – Start Time 2:00pm:

Featuring Students:

- Loril Shannik - Loril Shannik has maintained a deep love and respect for the traditional Celtic music of her Gaelic heritage - music that extends from the medieval era to present day. Her specialty and joy is the Celtic Harp. Loril is a Royal Conservatory trained musician who also plays piano, harpsichord, trombone and soprano/alto recorder. She was nominee in the category of Folk Traditional Recording of the Year at the Hamilton Music Awards in December 2009. www.lorilshannik.com

- Kate Todd - Since her starring role as “Lilly” on the award winning TV show Radio Free Roscoe Kate Todd has continued to focus on her musical career. She has made several appearances on Degrassi with her songs being featured on the Showcase Television show Casing In where she plays “Chrissy” an aspiring singer. Kate opened for Nelly Fertado at Earth Hour. She is currently signed with Coalition Entertainment and is working with a producer on a collection of new material. Meanwhile you can catch Kate as “Sally” on the hit show Life With Derek. www.katetodd.com

- Claire Abbott - At the young age of 12, Claire Abbott displays exceptional talent as a vocalist, songwriter and musician (piano & guitar). She is the only youth performer participating in the student showcase and rightfully so. Claire is someone to watch in the coming years as she is a “triple threat” and undoubtedly has a bright music career ahead of her.

- Taivi Lobu - Taivi Lobu is a veteran of the folk music scene in Toronto . She has written for choruses, performed with an Indonesian gamelan orchestra, and sung at the Bluebird Café. After years of devotion to social causes Taivi has returned to playing and songwriting, most recently with The Wye River Band. Her songs, ranging across the folk, rock and jazz idioms, are multi-faceted gems reflecting erudition, longing and community.

- Daniel Longmire - Longmire’s restless ambition created a diverse collection of songs with his debut album Venus Motel. Originally released under the name of “ Concord ”, the album has garnered positive reviews from Sweden to Australia and everywhere in between, including radio play, interviews and a showcase feature article in Canadian Musician magazine.

The Student / Musician Showcase will follow my Creative Voice Clinic - Start Time 1:00pm

Discover a big picture view of your FULL voice and learn what goes into developing your UNIQUE style. Understand the three separate components of voice. I will provide you with an overview of each component allowing you to see the complete vision of voice. The components covered are:

Component I – Vocal Technique
Component II - Voice Styles
Component III – Music Genres

Your voice is what carries the message of your music to your audience. You do not need to be technically perfect but you do need to have a command over your voice from a technical standpoint in order to bring out the best in your voice. I will teach you how!

Develop your vocal instrument to match the passion you have inside!

This is an experiential and interactive workshop so bring all your questions.
